Black Friday Gaming Deals
I'm in the midst of a move, so I'm not going to be able to do my typical pre-Black Friday shopping suggestions lists.
Be sure to check out value-add Black Friday ad aggregators like BFADS (link is to the video game section, but check out other categories as well), and deal mainstay CheapAssGamer.
There are some great deals from last Sunday through this weekend, like $15-20 off just released games (Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands, etc. at Target), amazing bundle deals (like an Xbox Live Arcade unit with Guitar Hero World Tour and free shipping for $199 at Amazon), and Xbox titles from $10-$25, but you need to be watchful to scalp stuff quickly or you're SOL (ask Mom to explain the acronym).
Me? I've already picked up things like the Tekken 6 LE version (with the Hori wireless fighting pad) for the price of the game alone, and will likely run around to get some cheapy games as stocking stuffers. Maybe.
Apologies again for punting on the Black Friday list this year -- things'll settle down once I relo.
Regardless, while a lot of GDC Europe and Gamescom did not float my boat (and Microsoft's presser certainly didn't), I am excited by the recent Sony / Microsoft tête-à-tête.
What tête-à-tête, you may ask?
Why, the $299 PS3 "Don't - call - me - 'Slim' - 'cause - Sony - says - it's - just - the - new - PS3", and the $299 Xbox 360 Elite.
So, now, both consoles have a 120Gb hard drive, both have HDMI, both are at the same price.
Now things are getting interesting.
The new Ps3 "not-slim" is smaller than the original PS3. But it doesn't have backwards compatability (which the 360 does for a boatload of titles, along with full game downloads). Online play is free for Sony-ites via its online service (PSN), whereas Xbox 360 charges $50 a year for access to Xbox Live (but you get a lot more content for that fifty bucks, so arguably you get what you pay for).
The PS3 has built-in Blu-ray support, and the 360's HD-DVD add-on is a dead goat (or something). But Xbox has streaming Netflix exclusivity, which is huge for me (and it has Netflix party, but in it's current state, I call a negative).
Microsoft has (for me) way more compelling arcade titles, and I like their indie games marketplace (though the crap to more-like-gold ratio is high). Sony is getting ready to launch "minis", which sound like cheap(ish), polished short-attention-span-theater-style games (which sounds great). But those are likely just PSP.
Sony looks like they're offering just the $299 version as a single SKU offering; Microsoft has both the Elite at $299, and the Arcade at $199 (which is cheaper than the Wii).
So ... does this change anything for you? Sway you one way or another? PS3 because of the new, smaller (not slimmer) form factor? Xbox 360 because the Elite is now $299?
Let me know in the comments. Though things could get more interesting. Microsoft's got more levers (what if they made Xbox Live cheaper? Free?). Sony could actually do something on their box (media wise) with all of the film, audio, and distribution studios and companies they own.
Batman: Arkham Asylum ships Tuesday (tomorrow), and since it looks like the best Batman video game since …*, it feels like I should call it out, and in particular, this deal from Toys “R” Us.
While buying the title at TRU gets common folk a $20 gift card, Rewards “R” Us Members get a $30 gift card instead -- if you are a member and pick up the game between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow (which is also Tuesday). The program is free, and you can enroll here.
TRU is also doing “buy one, get one half off” on Wii and DS titles this week. So, if you’re a mixed household, you could get Batman, then 6 hours later use your $30 for ImaginzParamedics and ImaginzEmergency Intubation (caveat: these are not really games; yet).
If you go this route, check the videos carefully. It's probably fine, but I've done these DVD offers in the past, and passed on them because the two-pack versions didn't have the special features (interviews with Bruce Timm, voice sessions, etc.) that really made the purchases valuable for me.
* To be fair, 1989’s Batman: The Caped Crusader on the Atari ST and Amiga was really good. It was probably published by Ocean Software and/or Data East, depending on the platform. It's been a long time.
Ah, "Black Friday" -- that day after Thanksgiving shopping madness where people cast off their contentedness from the day before, in exchange for the chance to save a buck or two on that thing they can't live without, and punk gamers can play tug-o-war with old grannies horribly transformed, for that last NDS Lite (two guesses which one I was).
First, some general stuff.
If you're someone (ironically, like me) who wants a full list of deals so you can determine your own prioritization, CheapAssGamer.com just posted their list (Updated: now has a handy breakout by platfrom). You can also go to some of the better-known Black Friday aggregate sites that let you view just the gaming deals (*):
Oh, and I'm not hitting tertiarily related gaming deals (like TVs and couches), but there are some good deals out there if you're interested (like Samsung LCD TVs at Best Buy).
Other caveats? Erm, prices may change, games may be available for more / fewer platforms, deals may be for the weekend, Black Friday, or early a.m. doorbusters, I may have screwed something up, blah blah blah.
Now onto my lists.
There are some decent gamer deals this year, and you could slice and dice them a bunch of ways, but for this post I'm going to focus on these four categories:
The Fantastic Game Deals
Big discounts on newly released titles
Handheld and Console bundles, Accessories
The Non-deals
1. The Fantastic Game Deals
There are some people who seem to have unlimited time and money to game -- Let's call them "unemployed slack-bastards".
But that's not who I am.
I have limited time and funding (I have to share with my comic book and toy fetishes), so I hit some of the bigger players (Fallout 3, Gears 2, etc.), some more casual titles (stuff from PopCap or The Behemoth), and stuff I'd rather rent than buy (lightweight hack-n-slashers, etc.).
For me, the sweet spot for Black Friday "Fantastic Game Deals" falls into that "stuff I'd rather rent than buy" -- those prices where I can buy a game I want to try for close to the price it'd cost to rent. An additional nuance is if I can find rent-price co-op titles, I can also take care Christmas giftage for my gaming brethren. Keep in my mind my personal cut-off for these kinds of deals is ~10, but there are some decent deals to be had for $15-20.
Here are some of the deals that have my attention:

2. Big discounts on newly released titles
There are a bunch of newly and relatively newly released titles that have shipped, and the barrier to purchase goes down tomorrow. While not the "Holy Crap" deals some of the above are (with the possible exception of Brothers in Arms), they make for a much more accessible way to get more recent titles.

4. The Non-deals
I think Kotaku.com calls these "the uneducated parent deals", but beware of console "deals" that are list price, and then list "with [1,2] free games!" -- The current Xbox holiday bundles ship with free games, so the retailer isn't doing you a favor. Also, beware of games deals like the Orange Box for $19.99 (places like Target have this as their new regular price.
First, I'm chomping at the bit for Bethesda's Fallout 3, but was kind of on the fence about paying $20 extra for the special edition. Over at Circuit City, though, they're giving a $10 gift card and a mini strategy guide if you buy the regular or special edition version (and $10 cards for various other games shipping this week). Hey, for what's ostensibly a ten-spot extra, I'll pick up the special edition, with its art book, bobblehead, making-of DVD, and lunchbox (I needs me a new lunchbox).
Next up for anyone looking for an Xbox 360, there look to be a bunch of deals coming up at Sam's Club. While the search on the site seems a bit borked right now, Kotaku reveals a Guitar Hero bundle -- which, besides the 60Gb, should - be - the - only - version - but - we'll - call - it -our - middle - SKU, version, and the bundled Kung Fu Panda and LEGO Indiana Jones games, it also comes with the full-guitar version of Guitar Hero III. And it's only $50 more ($349 total) than the 60Gb version by itself. Should be available middle of November.
GameStop is doing "Buy 2, Get 1 Free Sale" on all used games and accessories (you can use coupon code GSB2G1 if you're ordering online).
If you have an Edge Card, you get an extra 10% off. What makes this particularly cool is if you're not inappropriately fixated on "next-gen" graphics, there are a bunch of original Xbox, Gameboy Advance, GameCube, etc. titles you can get for peanuts, that all play on their now-gen successors.
For example, print out the Xbox backwards compatibility list (from Xbox.com, once it's back online), and pick up things like Project Snowblind for $2.49, Hunter: The Reckoning (a personal fav) for $2.99, etc. (if you're looking online, I just sorted used Xbox games by price). And this is all before discounts.
Of course, the discount applies to current-gen games too, so it makes GameStop's not-discounted-enough titles more palatable, if you're looking for new or recent titles.
(I'm not affiliated with or paid by GameStop / EBGames. ;-)
I'm curious to see how the Xbox 360 price drops change the retail landscape (or not), with the $199 Arcade version the cheapest now-gen console on the market. Dunno if Nintendo will follow suit, but Sony's already said they don't feel the need to drop their price.
In case you were wondering, here's the new official retail price breakout for the U.S. (Japan may get a similar price drop, but the UK, not so much):
There are even rumors that Call of Duty 4 will be $29.99 at Circuit City the following week of the 14th (if this is the GotY edition, pick ... it... up), and Gears of War (for PC) will be $14.99.
I'm probably being really unfair to other retailers and platforms, but those are the only things that jumped out for me this weekend.
On the games front, if you don't own the earned-excellence that is Call of Duty 4, you can pick it up at Circuit City for $39.99 -- and it's the "Game of the Year" edition, which includes all of the new maps for free.
If you want a console, Circuit City's giving a $30 gift card when you buy any XBOX 360 (now that we're living in mixed SKU/hard drives-ville). If you're a Madden fan (sorry sorry sorry, I just can't do it), at Target you get a $40 gift card when you buy Madden NFL ’09 and either a 60GB or 120GB XBOX 360. Or at Best Buy, you get a free wireless controller when you tag Madden '09 and any XBOX 360.
As an aside, I'm surprised to see the PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots already discounted (even if slightly, at $54.99) at Target.
And while I don't believe PC gaming is actually on the decline, it is a bit sobering to see no PC entertainment titles listed for Target, Best Buy, or Circuit City this week.
Ahead of its E3 keynote, Microsoft has made official the rumored $50 price drop for its 20Gb Xbox 360, ahead of the release of the new, replacement 60Gb version.
Not only can gamers get the 20Gb version starting today at most major retailers, some are doing shopping incentives in addition -- like Target, who's are giving $25 gift cards plus the fifty-buck price drop.
(Dunno if the new 60Gb version will be $300 or $350.)
Full Microsoft press release:
Redmond, Washington—Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.
Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.
"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."
Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).
Best new deal this week may be the $100 Blu-ray gift card you get if you buy a PS3 at Wal-Mart. It's the 40Gb version, but someone let me know if get this if you buy an 80Gb Motorstorm backwards-compatible bundle -- that would be doubly (quantuply?) sweet.
For value-add schwag when buying new releases Tuesday or Wednesday, looks like Circuit City is the place -- Incredible Hulk ($10 gift card), Ninja Gaiden II (RYU Wall Graphix), Kung Fu Panda (plush toy, and the game only at $50), The Bourne Conspiracy (Bourne Identity DVD), and LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (unlockable Belloq character, a T-Shirt, and the game only at $50).
Grand Theft Auto IV hits this week, and the deals are a-flying -- particularly for Xbox 360 new owner wannabes.
You can get $50 gift cards from Best Buy (Xbox 360 only) or KMart (360 or PS3, and the latter by mail) if you buy a console and any version of that console's GTAIV. At Circuit City, you get a wireless controller & Gamer's Savings Club membership for buying a 360 and GTAIV, or $10 gift card with just the game.
The Special Edition feels about right, at $89.99, it's $40 over the price for the standard* edition, but it comes with the game, a safety deposit box, art book, CD soundtrack, Rockstar keychain & duffle bag. A safety deposit box -- now that I'm in the game industry, I'm thinking of getting the special edition just to store employee reviews in this bad boy.
The soundtrack is allegedly new material, and not a subset of the 200 in-game songs (Updated:Full 16-song list at Kotaku.com).
But don't miss the competitive offers, too -- saving you cash on other big games, as all of the big boys do what they can to move units in the face of one of the biggest releases last year through next.
On the Circuit City front, try $30 BioShock (360 -- why have you not played it? Why?); $45 Frontlines: Fuel Of War (360); $35 Bully: Scholarship Edition (360, which uses the Gamebryo engine, and Wii); $40 Condemned 2 : Bloodshot (360 and PS3) and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (PS3).
At Best Buy, it's $30 Assassin’s Creed (360, PS3); $50 Viking: Battle For Asgard (360 and PS3); $50 Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game Of The Year Edition (360, limited, and includes a token for free maps, and they're selling the PC version for only $40).
These are just the games / deals I care about. For a more comprehensive, consolidated list across platforms and stores, check out Cheap Ass Gamer (more Wii titles, newish titles like Dark Sector, Army of Two, and Turok, etc.).
* Yeah, I know list price for console SKUs is $60, so some would say it's "only" $30 over the standard edition. But I think this generation's console software price bump is artificial, and PS3 and 360 owners are subsidizing PC and Wii development and sales when we pay this price. There, I said it. Again.
I'm wicked impressed, and want to file this under "little guys with great marketing concept make good".
2D Boy -- "a brave new indie game studio based in San Francisco, making games the old fashioned way - a team of two, no money, and a whole lot of 'love'" -- has struck a deal with retailers (Target stores being possibly first out of the gate).
You can buy independent game game T-shirts, which come with a demo or full version of the game, for like $12.
A bunch of the titles are a la the Experimental Gameplay Project (clothing company egp apparel looks to be an offshoot of the effort), and this is a slick way to get indie cred mainstream recognition (the tags talk quite a bit about the games and creators).
Check your local Best Buy, but I'm seeing a Sunday circular price of $37.99 for Halo 3 ($22 off list).
Of less interest to many (but perhaps more interest to a very select, demographically complex few), Naruto: Rise of the Ninja is also $38. Oh, and Transformers: The Game is $30.
Looks like my annual shopping recommendations and awesome deals post isn't going to happen this year, so check your local papers for whatever happens this Sunday before Christmas.
OK, for the last like five or six years I've given you a heads up on video game deals for Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving).
This year, I'm just pointing you to blackfriday.info, the Website that dares to post circulars from major retailers for your shopping insanity pre-planning enjoyment.
What's the awesome?
You probably need to find what floats your boat (and look for ads for stores in your area, and remember that mistakes or miss-listings do happen occasionally).
But how about a $25 PC Game version of The Orange Box at Best Buy (or a $5 XBox 360 version of Gun, which is cheaper than renting it)?
Maybe a Wal-Mart trip, to net a $30 video rocker chair (which may even be the wireless version, saving you $60)?
Maybe Circuit City, to get a $10 gift card to take the sting out of not being able to get Halo 3 or Assassin's Creed on sale?
Then there's KB Toys, with "buy one get one free entire stock of video games" (limit 4).
Sam's Club will allegedly have the Renegade Game Chair for $180 ($120 off MSP).
Personally, I think Target has some of the better deals on recent games for $48 -- Heavenly Sword, Project Gotham Racing 4, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box (Xbox 360) -- and some deals like $38 for Gears of the War (XBox 360), and $17 for Saints Row (Xbox 360).
So, here's my math representing the new cost of the HD DVD add-on: $179.99 HD DVD player - $99.99 Heroes Season 1 on HD DVD (free) - $27.00 King Kong (HD DVD pack-in) ------------------------------ $53.00 Total
So, depending on how you're selling this opportunity to your significant other, your either getting an HD DVD player for fifty-three bucks, or you're getting the player for free, and five HD DVD titles for a little over $10 a piece.
It's a shame the free titles are a little ... lackluster.
Like most purchasing decisions, you have options. You can go to Wal-Mart, and for $10 less on the MSE (depending on your Wal-Mart), you can get the HD DVD player and 300, rather than "Heroes" (and still get the five free movies).
Of course, rumor has it there's an HD DVD Xbox 360 in the works (which would also include a TV tuner). But that won't see the light of day until probably late next year.
In addition to that, the bundle lists "Bioshock" [sic], Two Worlds. , and "Half-Life 2" (I assume this is the Orange Box edition).
The Outpost.com bundle lists for $399.99, so given the announced $350 MSE for the Holiday SKU, for fifty extra bucks you get two great games (and one debatably good game), which Fry's Electronics (at least in my neck of the woods) are selling for $50, $40, and $60, respectively.
Of course, clicking on the link was taking me to a "Page not Found", and is now redirecting me to the site's front page.
I'm trying to get a response from Customer Service, and I'll post an update here.
Updated: According to Outpost.com Customer Support, "Unfortunately we have sold out of that bundle."
Since I clicked on the bundle the instant it showed up in my inbox (got an SMS when the Email arrived), and didn't get a "Out of Stock" notice, I doubt this is true. But, what are you gonna do?
